If you are designated as an heir of a deceased person, you have the choice of accepting or refusing the succession. In general, a succession is refused if the total debts of the deceased exceed the value of the property inherited.
If you accept the succession, you cannot change your mind. You must pay the debts up to the value of the property you inherited. If you renounce the succession, you must sign a deed before a notary. You must make your decision within six months of the death.
