Death benefit (Québec Pension Plan)

Responsibility : Régie des rentes du Québec

On your death, if you contributed sufficiently to the Québec Pension Plan, a death benefit of up to $2500 may be paid.

Who receives the death benefit?

The benefit is paid, as a priority, to the person or charity that paid the funeral expenses, up to the amount of the expenses or the maximum amount of the benefit ($2500). In that case, the application must be filed within 60 days of the date of death, accompanied by proof of payment.

If no application is made within 60 days, the death benefit may be paid to the heirs. The application must be made within five years of the date of death.

Note

The Régie des rentes du Québec does not reimburse the expenses relating to prearranged funeral services. However, the Régie pays $2500 to heirs who apply for it. The death benefit is taxable.
