On your death, your spouse may be entitled to the surviving spouse’s pension, if you worked in Québec and contributed sufficiently to the Québec Pension Plan. The pension is paid by the Régie des rentes du Québec and serves as a basic income for the surviving spouse of a deceased contributor.
The amount depends on several factors, including the contributions you paid, the age of your surviving spouse, whether he or she receives a disability pension or a retirement pension, and whether you have dependent children.
To apply for a surviving spouse's pension
Fill out an Application for Survivors' Benefits and enclose the required documents.
Note
A de facto spouse is recognized as a surviving spouse if you lived together in a de facto union for at least three years, or one year if you had a child together or adopted a child.
