Driver’s licence

Responsibility : Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec

On the death of a loved one who had a driver’s licence, you must notify the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec so that the licence can be cancelled. If you are the liquidator of the succession, you are authorized to ask for reimbursement of the cost of the driver’s licence. The amount reimbursed is based on the number of months between the date of death and the expiry date of the licence.

If the death was the result of a road accident, you may receive benefits from the SAAQ. Consult the Pensions, annuities, and other survivor benefits section of this guide.

You may go to a SAAQ service centre or send your request by mail. You must provide the licence holder’s personal information, including the date of birth, and submit the driver’s licence, the original death certificate and the other documents attesting to the death. In all cases, reimbursement will be paid by cheque, made out to the succession and sent by mail.

Note

Remember to keep a record of the driver’s licence number.
