Access to medical files

Responsibility : Commission d’accès à l’information

If you wish to consult a deceased person’s medical or social record to learn the cause of death, you can do so, under certain conditions, if you are:

  • the surviving spouse;
  • a direct ancestor or descendent;
  • an heir or a legal representative, for the representation of the deceased’s rights;
  • a person related by blood, to verify whether a genetic or hereditary disease may have caused the death;
  • the beneficiary of the deceased’s life insurance or pension plan.

Certain conditions apply.
