Unclaimed property and successions

Responsibility : Revenu Québec

In the event of a death, it can happen that the deceased does not leave a spouse or relatives who are entitled to inherit, or that no heir comes forward to accept or refuse the succession.

In either case, the succession is declared unclaimed six months after the person’s death. It is then taken in charge by Revenu Québec, the organization responsible for the administration of unclaimed property such as successions, financial assets (securities, bonds, savings accounts, etc.) and any other property located in Québec whose owner is unknown or untraceable.
